How to Spot Good Plywood – Before It
Wastes Your Money
Plywood can make or break your interior. Quite literally. While it’s one of the most versatile materials in construction and carpentry, not all plywood is created equal. Here’s how to know you’re getting quality:
1. Layer Consistency
Good plywood has tightly packed, evenly stacked core veneers. Run your hand along the
edge — if you see open gaps or random filler, it’s a red flag.
2. Sound Test
Knock on the surface. A dull, solid thump = bonded well. Hollow, echoey sounds = weak glue
or poor compaction.
3. Glue & Resistance
Rub a damp finger on the cut edge. Quality plywood (like BWP or Marine Grade) won’t swell,
peel, or smell of excessive for maldehyde.
4. Certification
Look for stamped ratings: BWR (Boiling Water Resistant), BWP (Boiling Water Proof), ISI
Mark, or “Marine Grade”. If it isn’t clearly stamped or seems suspicious — trust your gut and
walk away.
5. Finish & Texture
A uniform grain pattern, no delamination, and minimal warping — these are signs of
plywood that’ll hold up under pressure.
